Urban Watershed Assessments

San Francisco, CA

The Urban Watershed Assessments (UWA) employ an integrated, watershed-wide approach to define the most effective capital improvement projects that address surface drainage and collection system challenges for each of the City’s eight urban watersheds.  After developing alternatives that can achieve San Francisco’s stormwater and wastewater performance objectives, UWA evaluates the alternatives using a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) Analysis that takes into account a range of social, environmental, and financial costs and benefits.  As a transparent, quantitative decision-making process that incorporates stakeholder feedback and weighs alternatives based on TBL factors, the UWA represents an innovative and forward-thinking “new way of doing business” for the SFPUC.
