Sunset Boulevard Greenway
SAN FRANCISCO, CA

< PROJECTS
The Sunset Boulevard Greenway project is one of eight Early Implementation Projects being implemented by the SFPUC, with the objective of demonstrating the efficacy of green infrastructure (GI) stormwater features in reducing the peak flows and overall volume of runoff that enter the city’s combined sewer system. The project includes 30 rain gardens over 12 blocks designed to reflect the natural topography and soil conditions of Sunset Boulevard, which are incredibly supportive of stormwater infiltration, and will improve stormwater management for 19 acres of paved surfaces in the Sunset District. Comprised of native and drought-tolerant plants chosen for their resilience during both wet and dry conditions, the rain gardens are projected to manage 5.3 million gallons of stormwater annually.
Lotus has collaborated throughout the planning and design process with a multidisciplinary design team, SFPUC, multiple city agencies, and community stakeholders. The project is located on public land and right-of-way, necessitating careful navigation of jurisdictional issues and associated interagency coordination.
During the planning phase, Lotus completed technical analyses and modeling to determine the location, size, and form of the GI. For the design phase, Lotus led development of detailed facility design and street improvement, grading, and drainage plans. In the final design phase, Lotus provided technical support and senior review of SF Public Works documents. Lotus maintains a technical review role through construction, post-construction O&M, and performance monitoring.
